HUM 100 Project 1 Artifact ChartgAlthough you will work on various assignments throughout the course to support you in
completing this assignment, this project is not due until Week 6.
Artifact
What is your chosen artifact? Include a link to
or a picture of the artifact.
The Rosetta Stone
I.
Describe the artifact in detail. For
instance, how would you describe it to
someone who could not see it?
Rosetta Stone is characterized by a varying
emanating from a granite block that’s broken
into a large piece (Ray, 2017). It is identifiable
with smooth finishing that comes to the
inscription. It has the aspects of the hieroglyphs
in addition to a few other languages applied in
the culture of Egyptians.
II.
Choose elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you
experience it and explain why. For instance, what particularly catches your senses or
makes you want to keep experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your
experience?
The vital element when it comes to Rosetta Stone is seen in the way it successfully helped in
unlocking the mystery of the hieroglyphs. Historians were interested in hieroglyphics, and
the stone becomes a powerful tool to create an understanding of the mystery (Ray, 2017). It
has significantly allowed historians to understand Egyptian history, especially regarding the
ancient times. Since its writing is carved, it makes it easy to know how important the
message is as portrayed in that manner.
Assumptions about your artifact
III.
State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of
the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the
creator is trying to express, and is that message successfully expressed?
Rosetta Stone was an artifact developed by the clergymen from Egypt together with Ptolemy. The
stone’s message creates a reminder of Ptolemy’s character. Interestingly, the message comes in
three languages to ensure that it was readable by many people. With such a strategy, the creator
could have been smart enough to pass the message. However, there is no certainty that it found
perceived success.
IV.
Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to
address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion,
social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the
artifact and its culture interrelate? For instance, how would a particular form of body
modification reflect the urban culture in which you encountered it?
The artifact offers an important input to the politics of society reflected through it. The ruler was
a god to them; probably more considerate approach to head them. The inclusion of the clergy
where it participates in creating the artifact is a clear indicator of the excellent ties between the
leadership and the religion (Ray, 2017). Generally, this shows a significant influence it could
have on the society where people trust their ruler. The era marred with the aspects of people
respecting the rulers as their earthly gods. The magnitude of the value of how it was carved to
remain permanent shows how worthy the ruler was to society.
The carvings, mummifications, and statues are most common on the Rosetta stone.
V.
Use the artifact to discuss how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by
the people and situations that surround it. How might the artifact and the person who
created it have impacted each other? For instance, how might the geographic location
where the artifact was made, the materials used to create the artifact, the medium of
the creative process, or the environment where the artifact is displayed influence the
creator’s life or future creative work? How might the artifact and the culture or context
in which it was created have impacted each other? For instance, does the artifact add to
the understanding of the culture from which it was created? What contributions does it
make to continuing on a dialogue about that culture and the importance of its artifacts?
The artwork shown by the Rosetta stone could be based on a favor for the ruler. The creators
could have had experience in creating other similar artifacts before the Rosetta stone, making it
possible for them to create such a famous carving on the stone. Moreover, the artifact could be
devotion and show of love and adoration top the ruler. It comes like an appreciation to the ruler’s
style of leading that was characterized with kindness and generosity. Again, there must have been
a strong affection created between him and the people, including the clergymen. Even though the
image speaks various indications of the Egyptian culture, still it’s not rich enough to understand
the more significant part of it (Picknett & Prince, 2019). Despite that, it’s sufficient to give a good
indication of the possible understanding of the hieroglyphics.
VI.
Questions: Pose questions you have after thinking deeply about this artifact. What more
do you want to know regarding:
A. The relationship between human culture and expression
B.
Question 1: What colors of Egyptian culture are shown by Rosetta Stone?
Question 2: What was the reason that the creator used 3 languages for engraving it?
C. Your personal assumptions about artifacts of this sort and why they exist
D.
Question 1: What was the motive behind calling the stone “Rosetta” by the creator?
Question 2: What was the reason behind having a stone with only black color?
C. How your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others
Question 1: How long did it take to complete the Stone?
Question 2: Why did creator made this stone?
E. The relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its
meaning
F.
Question 1: How did Egyptian Culture saw the impact of that stone?
Question 2: Why did Rosetta Stone creator used hieroglyphics?
VII.
Speculate on how you would go about answering these questions. For instance, what
sorts of things would you study about these kinds of artifacts and their contexts that
might begin addressing these questions?
The internet can offer some of the best resource centers to achieve and get the solutions to the
questions. In this case, many materials have written details regarding the Rosetta stone and the
artifact itself. Generally, the researchers and their works are well accessible online in different
databases. Internet being an easy search tool, this will not be hectic in any way. Articles and
research materials with the facts and pictures of evidence can be found, creating a sound basis of
the culture and the society associated with the artifact.
HUM 100 Project 2 Short Answer Responses Guidelines and Rubric
Overview
The enduring relevance of the humanities is that they encourage us to consider a number of “big ideas.” What is culture? How do we go about studying it? What
is the relationship between cultural artifacts and the culture in which they are created? Between artists and the creators of cultural artifacts and the things they
create? How is human meaning generated through cultural creations? We humans seem driven to express and create in our search to understand and be
understood.
In Project 2, you will use the ideas you have studied throughout the course in addition to the insights you have gained from your deep thinking about your
chosen artifact to discuss why humans are driven to express themselves in so many ways. You will draw conclusions about the reciprocal relationship between
forms of expression and the context in which they are created and experienced.
The short answer response assignment will assess the following course outcomes, which you focus on throughout Themes 3 and 4:
Investigate major developments in the humanities for informing critical questions related to human culture and endeavors
Articulate the value of the humanities for their impact on contemporary issues focusing on how humans generate unique meanings
Prompt
Articulate the value of human creative expression to the advancement of human culture. Be sure to state your opinions clearly and specifically and to provide
ample detail from your course materials and the study of your chosen artifact in Project 1. You should address each of these in writing as three separate
explanations. This is not meant to be an essay.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I.
Explain why you believe humans have a need to express themselves through created artifacts.
A. Explain the larger human need to express using the insights you gained from studying your artifact.
B. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation.
II. Explain how you think the act of human creative expression impacts and is impacted by the culture in which it was created.
A. Explain the larger reciprocal relationship between human creative expression and the culture in which it was created using the insights you
gained from studying your artifact.
B. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation.
III. Explain how you believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with today. Be sure to be specific about the issues you are addressing.
A. Use the insights you gained from studying your artifact to explain how creative expression can impact today’s issues.
B. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation.
