  • Step 1—Healthy People Data Visualization: Visit the DATA2020database for Healthy People (i.e., the Data Search tab on www.HealthyPeople.gov ). From the Topic Area drop-down menu, select any area of interest. Click the Searchbutton to review search results. On the results page, scroll through the entries and select one (1) Healthy People Objective that has a View Chart button. This will open a new page that depicts a visual representation of this Healthy People objective’s data. Take a screenshot of this data visualization (you will insert this into your initial post).
  • Step 2—Public Health Research, Policy, or Practice: Use the Shapiro Library and identify a peer-reviewed journal article pertaining to the topic area you selected in Step 1. The article should be published in a public-health specific (i.e., nonmedical) journal and should involve research, policy, or practice within the topic area. Download the full text of this article and review it carefully.
  • Using the data visualization (from Step 1) and the journal article (from Step 2), please proceed with your initial discussion post.

In your discussion post, please address the following:

  • Part 1—Explanation of Topic Area and Data Visualization (100 words): First, summarize the topic area and indicate the selected Healthy People Objective. Interpret the findings/trends from the data visualization. Is progress being made towards the desired outcome? Please explain your rationale for interpreting the data in this manner. Include a screenshot of the visual with your submission.
  • Part 2—Summary of Journal Article (100 words): Discuss the public health research, policy, or practice and its relationship to the Healthy People Objective identified in Part 1.
  • Part 3—Connecting Data Trends and Decision Making (100 words): Imagine that you are a health professional who (co)authored the selected journal article. How would the Healthy People data visualization inform the decisions you make? What would you have done differently compared to the actual author(s)? Please explain your rationale and provide examples.

In response to your peers, ask questions to increase the clarity of their response and your understanding. Also, provide your thoughts on how a public health organization could respond to the findings to help improve the corresponding health issue in their community. Is further research necessary? Is there a program addressing this issue in place? Does a new program or policy need to be created? Think about how a public professional would try to address the issue this data has identified.

Topic Area and Data Visualization:
One of the objectives from Healthy People 2020 is to decrease asthma deaths among children and adults under age 35. Asthma is a global health issue that continues to have increasing impacts on health and morbidity of children worldwide. In fact, it is considered the most prevalent chronic condition experienced by children  (Serebrisky & Wiznia, 2019). However, deaths from asthma are rare in individuals under age 35, and those deaths are largely considered preventable. While these deaths are rare, there are racial and social disparities seen in the data of who dies from asthma within this age group.

According to the visualization, while the total rate for all pediatric asthma deaths is low and relatively stable, the rate of Black or African American children who do not identify as Hispanic or Latino is nearly three times as high (Healthy People, 2022).
Journal Article Summary:
Data was compiled from Multiple Causes of Death Files of the US National Center for Health Statistics and the Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Multiple Causes of Death Files from 1999 to 2018 (Gadela, et al., 2021). Analyses were done to assess the pediatric asthma death rates based on racial categorization. These analyses showed that Black children were more likely to die from their asthma than children of other races. For instance, “from 1999 to 2018 in the US, Black children aged 1–14 years of age were from 6.87 times more likely to die from pediatric asthma than their White counterparts” (Gadela, et al., 2021). This is significant to point out because even though the death rate of pediatric asthma in this country has decreased (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018), there still needs to be progress made to make those improvements more equitable.
Data Trends and Decision Making:
If I were a (co)author on the article above, I would have been influenced by the Healthy People data to refocus my years of interest. Perhaps it would have been interesting to divide the pediatric death rates further. Racial distinctions should still be explored, but they could be explored by dividing the years into two groups as well. For instance, one group could be 1999 to 2008 and the second could be 2009 to 2018. This would divide the data more closely with the dates for the Healthy People data and be a better comparison. This also would allow for further analysis on improvements over time.

Millions of the people in the United States carry genes that cause blood disorders like hemophilia and sickle cell disease. Healthy people 2030 focuses mostly on improving the quality of life and health standards of the people who carry these genes and have blood disorders. Sickle cell disease affects more than 100,000 people in the United States, the use of hydroxyurea can improve the health outcomes of people suffering from the disease (Crunkhorn, 2020). Blood transfusion on the other hand can help prevent most of the blood disorders and treat blood complications. Hemophilia affects mostly the male population; it is a chronic bleeding disease. Preventive measures can reduce the joint damage.
It is important to examine the various blood disorders that affects people, highlighting the latest advancement in the field. This advancement helps us understand the various blood disorders. Such as clothing disorders, Thrombotic disorders and various genetic disorders. The journal offers a wide understanding of all aspects of blood-related disorders such as prevention, diagnosis and management (Crunkhorn, 2020). This information guides all patients and the affected families on how to manage the sick and prevent the diseases by improving their lifestyle. In relation to the healthy people 2030, many people fail to manage the disorders therefore this journal helps by giving information on how to diagnose the various diseases.
Decisions making is crucial in health professional, information gathered from the journal can help in the diagnosis and prevention strategies. As a health professional advice should be given to family members of the patients. If one member of the family carries genetic disorders, there are chances there are more of the family members in the family suffering with the same condition, therefore as a professional all the family members should visit the clinic or the health center to be diagnosed of the same. This will help in early prevention and management made easily to both the victim and the family members. Health objective will be achieved.
