Students are required to write about a particular social problem that has affected their immediate or extended family.  In your introduction, please state why you consider this particular issue a social problem.  Be sure to include facts and figures showing the extent of this social problem within our society.  In other words, how many and what types of people are affected by this issue?  Be sure to use credible sources for your information and properly cite your sources.  MLA or APA can be used to cite your sources.  Students are then required to describe the origin/s of this problem within their family.  In other words—how did this problem originate or start within your family?  Students are then required to write about some of the consequences that this problem has had on members of your family.  Finally, students are expected to provide at least three practical solutions to remedy or lessen this social problem.  Please remember that the focus of your solutions should not just be on an individual level, but more importantly, on a societal level.  In other words, what can we, locally as a state, and nationally, as a country do to solve or lessen these problems?  You are allowed to submit your essay early (at least two weeks prior to the due date) if you would like me to review it and provide you with feedback.  The paper is required to be a minimum of 4 complete pages and is worth a total of 20% of your overall grade.  Your final paper must be submitted on or before November 18.  Please note that late submissions for any of your papers will be severely penalized–for everyday late, 5% of your paper’s grade will be deducted.   
Essays are to be submitted online within the week that it is due using the electronic drop-box.  All work must be typed, double spaced, using the font size of 10 or 12, and must done in Times New Roman.  Your work will be graded on the basis of content, grammar, and adherence to the previously mentioned guidelines.  I expect students to write ethically.  Any information drawn from works published by others must be appropriately cited within the body of your work, and then referenced as part of a bibliography page.  Work that is not properly cited or plagiarized could result in a failing grade.
