Summary of the film

The romantic movie I chose is Always Be My Maybe. It features Sasha and Marcus as childhood friends who grew up next door in San Francisco. Their relationship grew to their teenage hood where they made love, had an argument, and shortly afterwards they parted ways and lost contact. Later after 15 years of separation, they are reunited, have a misunderstanding again, but at the end they sort out their issues and move on together. The movie impressed me the way the Asian culture is portrayed because it helps audience understand the Asian culture. Also, the concept of destiny revealed in the movie is a good lesson to young people who may be struggling with love and long distance relationships because it shows if destiny had it that people will be together, then they will regardless of distance and circumstances. Time is the determinant of everything and it requires patience and understanding.

Film Review: Always Be My Maybe

Introduction

Always Be My Maybe is a romantic comedy film produced in 2019, directed by Nahnatchka Khan, written by Ali Wong, Michael Golamco, and Randal Park. The movies stars two childhood friends Park and Wong and Sasha and Marcus who have not seen each other since teenage hood relations was marred with misunderstandings. Sasha moved to Francisco to open a restaurant something that Marcus did not taken lightly because he believed that Sasha’s demanding career and fame would pose challenge to their young relationship. 

Plot Summary

Always Be My Maybe features Sasha and Marcus as childhood friends grew up next door in San Francisco. Sasha’s parents used to leave her alone as they went to tend to their store and Marcus parents used to invite her home. Marcus mother taught her how to cook. As a result, Marcus and Sasha’s relationship grew to their teenage hood until when Marcus’s mother died in a car accident. While still mourning his mother, the two lovebirds made love, had an argument, and shortly afterwards they parted ways and lost contact. Later after 15 years of separation, they are reunited, have a misunderstanding again, but at the end they sort out their issues and move on together. 

Description

The lighting system and the music during the red carpet awards is a scene that culminated the film and impressed me the most. The setting was a perfect one for reunion between the two as it ushered the new beginning of Sasha and Marcus’s love life where Marcus pledged to be wherever Sasha would be hence the title Always Be My Maybe.

Analysis

Destimr is evident in the movie when Sasha and Marcus meet 15 years later, Marcus still leaves with his father in his childhood home and performs in a talented band that is yet to be famous and only performs in the neighborhood and has a girlfriend called Jenny. On the other hand, Sasha is a celebrity and is engaged to Choi who is a successful entrepreneur in restaurants. Brandon delayed his weeding with Sasha leading to Sasha calling off the relationship and moved to Bay area where she opened a new restaurant. Coincidentally, she met with Marcus when his father was contracted to install air conditioning system in her temporary home. Marcus admitted to his father that he still had feeling for Sasha but before he could tell Sasha her feelings, Sasha told him that she was already in another relationship with Keanu Reeves who is a celebrity. However, Sasha and marcus broke their relationships and reunited. All the events show that destiny had it that they will be together despite time and distance.

Besides destiny, the concept of mind reading is evident in the movie when a long evening ended in chaos after Sasha confessed her crush to Marcus since their childhoods leading to confrontation between Keanu and Marcus with Keanu and jenny ending up spending the night together. From there, Marcus and Sasha reunited and began seeing each other. Marcus took her to t her old favorite joint, Cantonese restaurant, an outing that was characterized with a mixture of pain childhood memories of absentee parents and delicious meals in the joint. Her reconnection to her childhood city contributed to their falling in love but Marcus keeps distance when he realizes that Sasha was moving to New York for her new project after the launching of her restaurant in Francisco. Marcus declined Sasha’s invitation to accompany her to New York. Later, Marcus learnt that his mother’s death made him fail to move on with life. As a result, he regularly called Sasha for updates but in vain. Later he realized that Sasha was supporting his band when she surprised him in a red carpet award in Manhattan. Marcus asked Sasha to take him back and pledged to be by her side wherever she would be. They later moved to New York together. In all the separation, Marcus and Sasha appear to read each other’s mind and at last, they found out that they loved each other and resorted to be together. 

Conclusion 

Always Be My Maybe is a romantic movie that reflects the challenges teenagers and youths go through before settling in marriage. The humble background and later fame is a good message to teenagers that with time they can make ends meet. Moreover, the movies presents Asian culture and shows that time, life events, and distance cannot overturn what destiny had put in place.
