Interoperability communication refers to the ability of different communication systems to connect with each other and exchange data thus resulting to effective and faster communication. The concept of interoperability communication is very important as it deals with public safety for example during an accident or an explosion. It is normally used by first responders when reporting an emergency to get help. It is also important as it ensure that information is passed widely and faster to all the people who are required to receive it (Koontz, Rhodes & Jenkins (Jr), 2017).
Real world scenario where interoperability communication was not achieved
In April 20 1999 in Columbine High School, two sixteen year old students entered the school compound where they started a shooting spree which left fifteen people dead, they included and many others injured. Help arrived a few minutes after the attack where the local police, paramedics and fire fighters arrived. A few hours later there were more than 1000 law enforcement personnel. The biggest challenge was coordinating the help team due to lack of a common mode of communication. All agencies had different radio systems which were not compatible and sharing radios became hard as more agencies arrived. Use of mobile phones was also impossible due to overloaded phone network as the many news reporters used their cellular phones thus overloading the phone network (Mayer-Schönberger, 2002).
Consequences of failure of interoperability communications
It can hamper the ability to respond to the emergency because it will be impossible for the rescuers, paramedics or the police department to communicate and thus making it hard for team work between the groups. The lack of communication between the different groups could also have led to more deaths as it makes it hard for the paramedics to reach all the injured people in good time as communication could have helped in giving directions. It could also have led to slow operations as the teams will have to meet up after specified time to decide on the next step to take and also to take care of available emergences and also get information from other teams.
Impact of interoperability communication failure (Mayer-Schönberger, 2002).
In my estimation the lack of interoperability did not have a big impact. This was because the attackers in the crime had already killed themselves and thus there were no more deaths as there was no more attack (Mayer-Schönberger, 2002).
Recommendation to outcome lack of interoperability
There should be commitment of long-term interagency partnership where the system will be opened to all groups thus making communication possible between different groups. There should also be a detailed system description defining all the requirements and specifications between the vendor and all the agencies expected to participate. There should also be a unique mission which is able to accommodate the agency specific requirements in ensuring the required network is well managed. People expected to use the equipment should be well trained on how to handle the equipments (Desourdis, 2009).
Interoperability can be used in business enterprises as it can help to store a large amount of data and transactions. It can also be used as a way of communication in the enterprise or with other enterprises. Interoperability is also used by tourists before visiting do determine the places they wish to visit, book hotels online and also to buy travel tickets online. Interoperability can also be used in the medical field to store information such as patient data, stock bought and what is used in the dairy activities. It can also to share research finding information with other doctors and nurses.
