Ten Commandments by George Carlin.

According to George Carlin, the Ten Commandments make no sense. In this essay, I will support his take on the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are repetitive, and some contradict others. As George Carlin says, “thou shall not commit adultery, and Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife” mean the same thing. A man cannot commit adultery when they have not coveted a woman who is not their wife at some point. It is like a company fitting CCTV surveillance in their shop and inspecting every client walking out of the shop for stolen items. The two commandments can easily be adapted into one just as George says, “do not be dishonest.”

George Carlin makes a lot of sense in criticizing the number of commandments. They all revolve around the subject of being honest and truthful. “Thou shall not steal, thou shall not bear false witness” are both commandments talking about honesty. Again these Ten Commandments seem only to apply to Christians selectively. They are the only ones who pray to God and read the Bible. In the same Bible even Jesus was killed by people who claimed the word of God. How ironical is it that the same Bible that tells people not to kill, documents the killing of God’s son?

In the society today, the corporate world is based on ethics. The ethics are again what the Ten Commandments revolve around. Being honest, content with what we have and being generous. In business, companies compete to achieve better than their counterparts. In business, the issue of not coveting is not practical. Otherwise how would Steve Jobs strive to achieve better every day if his aim is not to make sure Microsoft and Google do not beat him in the game? In as much as the Ten Commandments are good, they are not versatile and practical for the world today.
