The Age of plastic

In the third passage of ‘The Age of Plastic’’, Craig Santos imagine life in Anthropocene by visualizing how plastic has become a need in life. It is as if people can longer function without plastic. However, as necessary as plastic looks, it is a trap. It adversely affects the Anthropocene and creates a distinct trajectory of the earth, that we are part. In the passage, Craig writes that plastic helps to store fresh food, delivers medicine, yet people use and dispose of it.

Consequently, it is the oceans that suffer from tons of plastic. The author shed light on the reality of how we have lived in Anthropocene, and it is now that the scale of the problems that man created, begin to show. The shift into the Anthropocene indicates that the earth eco-system is in danger. Human beings have incorporated plastic into every aspect of their lives, and are in an oblivion of what is to come.

In the discussion of how poets use the realities of the earth to promote their message, ‘’The Age of Plastic’, is one example. As opposed to traditional poetry that touches on things like societal happenings like elegy, grief, love, family, and such, this poem touches on nature and the changes that are happening as a product of human activities. The poem introduces the need to look beyond the aspect of society and extend our thinking to what is around. For so long, poetry has exploited human relationships leaving out the activities of man and how they affect nature. ‘’The Age of Poetry’’ is a wakeup call of how man has ushered us into the age of plastic.
