The Aged and Their Role in the Society

Productive Aging: Leisure, Spirituality, and Civic Engagement

The first two videos talk about the important role spirituality plays in the lives of the aging. Once people start aging, they start to think deeply about the experiences they have had and the mark they will leave in society. This is one of the things that make the aging start being spiritual, as they think of ways they can have a significant impact in the world as they prepare for their deaths.

Spirituality also helps the aged have peace of mind, as they near the end of their lives. One interviewee stated that spirituality had enabled him to live a fulfilling life because it makes him have a purpose in life. He has a principle that goes like, a person is as young as their spirituality and as old as the doubts they have about their lives (Lange, 2015). This is the main reason why many people start becoming more religious and spiritual as they age, as they want to seek the inner peace within them that will enable them to have better and enjoyable lives as they near the end of their lives.

Loss and Grief in Old Age

The second topic videos talk about loss and grief in old age. As one of the videos talk about the insecurities people face as they grow old, the other talks about the challenges the aged face in terms of their health as they near the tail end of their lives. Many people as they reach their early thirties start to think about their lives as they get old, and the many things that worry them are how they will be looking and whether they will have excellent emotional and social support in their lives (Reichel & Palmer, 2016). As people age, they start to be discriminated against, and this is what leads many people to be suicidal. Research has proved this as it shows that the suicide rate in the United States is higher in the age group of people aged 75 years and above. For this reason, it is imperative for society to take measures to help protect the aged from societal and economic pressures that come with age. Some methods that can help protect the elderly is by ensuring that once an older person is sick and weak, they are committed to an institution where they will get palliative and hospice care.

Economic Well-Being: Retirement, Employment, and Poverty

The third videos talk about the economic wellbeing of the aged, the kind of life they live, as well as the role they should be playing in society. Unlike in the early parts of the 20th century, people can live a longer life. In the first segment of 1900, the average lifespan was about 40 to 45 years, which has increased to about 80 to 70 today, and this means that the aged can have a life after they retire from their work. This gives them about 25 to 30 years more where they can live their lives and help change society. The fact that these people have good health and they are economically stable due to the right economic conditions that have been prevailing in the United States since after the second world war, they have been able to amass wealth and they can use this wealth to live a better life (Cruikshank, 2017). Many people choose to travel the world after they have retired, and this makes them have better quality lives at this period in their lives.
