The American Psychiatric Association

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) is a leading organization dealing with psychiatry in the world. With a membership of 37,800 members practicing in over 100 countries, APA deals with psychiatric practice and academia to address the diverse issues from the different patients whom they care for (The American Psychiatric Association , 2018).

The vision of the American Psychiatric Association is to be an organization of psychiatrists collaborating to provide a humane care and offer effective treatment to all people with mental illness. It seeks to be the voice and conscience of modern psychiatry. Though its presence, it endeavors there to be a society that has readily available, accessible quality psychiatric diagnosis and treatment (The American Psychiatric Association , 2018).

The mission of APA is to; advocate for the highest level of quality care for patients with mental illness among them those with substance use disorder, to ensure promotion of psychiatric education and research, to achieve advancement and representation of the profession, and to serve the professional needs of its members. 

The values of the American Psychiatric are well reflected in the mission and vision statements discussed above. The values on the nature of treatment include; Best standards of clinical practice, highest ethical standards of professional conduct, prevention, access, care and sensitivity for patients and compassion for their families, patient-focused treatment decisions, and scientifically established principles of treatment (The American Psychiatric Association , 2018). The values are well captured in the vision statement where it states that APA seeks to ensure human care and effective treatment for all patients. In the mission statements this are reflected in the statement that indicates that APA aims to promote highest quality care for individuals. 

The value on advocacy for patients is reflected on the vision statement where APA indicates that it aims to be the voice and conscience of modern psychiatry. This is captured in the mission statement that describes APA aim to advance and represent the profession of psychiatry. 

The values of life-long professional learning, collegial support, respect for diverse views and respect for other health professionals are not clearly reflected in the vision statement. However, they are reflected in the mission statement where it indicates that APA endeavors to serve the needs of its membership.
