The Bright Son

There once lived a woman, husband and their only son whom she loved so dearly. The boy was
diligent and very obedient. The mother fell ill and could not do the household chores. Her son
had to do the chores after school since his father came home late in the night from work. Blessed,
as his mother named him took care, fed and gave her the medicine she was taking due to the
illness. However, after weeks of continued sickness, her health deteriorated, and she died.
Months after her death, his father took in another wife who brought her two sons with her. The
stepmother treated him as a slave. When Blessed beat his stepbrother for burning his books, he
was severely punished which resulted in a human rights organization calling for the arrest of the
stepmother proving evil and nefarious activities do not go unpunished.
Blessed was bright and performed well in school than his step brothers. The stepmother
did not like that at all and did her best to prevent him from studying. Blessed had to look after
cattle, till the land and do the household chores while his step brothers were studying. With the
little time he studied, he still managed to outshine his step brothers at school. His step mother
was very irritated and decided not to pay his school fees for the next term which coincidentally
was his last session in primary education. When schools opened, blessed was not allowed in
school for lack of money. He was ordered by his step-mother to work on their farm and attend to
the cattle while his step brothers went to school. Blessed one day decided to go and speak to his
headmaster at school to explain his situation. The administrator advised him to ensure that he
revises since he would be allowed to sit for the final exam. He, therefore, carried his books with
him to the farm every day and studied thoroughly for his exams. He secretly reached out to his
teachers without the knowledge of the stepmother for help in revision. He sat for his final exams

and when results were released he performed exemplary and was the top pupil in his class. His
step brothers performed poorly and had to repeat while blessed would proceed to the next level.
The idea of repeating the same class angered his step brother’s so much that they set
ablaze blessed’s books and clothes. As a result blessed beat them up for having burnt books that
he was to use for his next level of studies. The step mother was so furious and poured a bucket
full of hot water on blessed inflicting injuries on him. He shouted for help and neighbors came to
his rescue. One of the neighbors who worked with a human rights organization looked into the
issue and the two days later the woman was arrested and imprisoned. The step brothers were
forced to leave the house and had a terrible time since they were sluggish and could not fend for
themselves.
