The Conservative American Mottos

  1. The motto has thirteen stripes representing the states that joined the Union to form the United States. In addition, a chief supports the stripes and represents the role of Congress in Uniting the States. This motto E Pluribus Un was suggested on July 4, 1776, by a Congress Committee that was tasked with designing the Seal of the United States. Even though the initial Seals for the motto were rejected, Charles Thomson adopted E Pluribus Un as the official motto. In 1782, Thomson created the final Great Seal, whose attraction was the American Bald Eagle (Great Seal).
  2. All About affirms that “Increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War.” During this period, many Americans were more prayerful and as the war was going on, many wanted an end to vices such as slavery. It was during this time that the Treasury engraved the words on the first coin. In the 1950s, the motto was used to show the world that America stood for good religious values. The move to use it was to counter the perceived secularism of the communist ideology that had its roots from the Soviet Union.
  3. Many non-Christian citizens felt that the motto imposed to them the values of the Bible against their will. Many felt that the government was directing to them hostility and intimidation for not being of the Christian faith from fellow citizens. Atheists felt the move was against the First Amendment that gave everybody the freedom of religion. Atheists felt that they were being forced as non-believers to believe in a Supreme Being who brings good fortune and watches over their country.
