The Optical Lasso by Marc Corwin

Commander James Cody disappeared into a wormhole created by his own invention 100 years ago and is currently only a fable. This is all unbeknownst to him. He shares a cell with a creature so perfect she might as well have been conjured up in his head. She is the leader of a fierce group of fighting women. She was on a mission to save another group of captives but he makes her roaster anyway. With so much mutual mistrust can they make it out alive? 

The author has woven a delightfully strange and completely engrossing plot that ping pongs between James, past and his present. There is a lot to experience. The story evokes different kinds of emotions at different junctures. It leaves the reader feeling bereft when the story comes to an end. The story pulls the reader in and takes them on a whirlwind journey through different time periods and effectively through Commander Cody’s mind. It is a quick but efficiently affective. Some of the construction of the setting is based on actual scientific facts. It is confusing to draw the line between reality and fiction when the reader encounters this. This is refreshing and happily encouraged. 

Marc Corwin is quite the word smith. His full use and utility of the language is clear evidence of his love for words. This only works to demonstrate his sheer competence and expertise. The book is light hearted with unrelenting wit and a uniquely classic plot. ‘The Optical Lasso’ is a surprisingly welcome punch in the gut for the shocking twists and action packed scenes colored with creative genius. The book is superb in grammar and sentence structure. The author does not hesitate to play with words which is a delectable treat. 

Characterization in this book was done to suit every reader individual which is obviously tough to pull off. Lt Cat is not to be messed with but she still maintains her femininity in a way that makes her character all that more likeable. Commander James is friendly and regular but also extraordinary at the same time. He is a walking contradiction but wholesome. Both characters are unexpected and it is probably the most infuriating thing but also captivating and interesting. 

This book is really suitable for young adults and adults alike. It has characters the YA crowd can admire and be inspired by. Characters they can look up to in absolute awe. They might not completely connect with the interactions but they will for sure love the plot and Marc’s imagination. The adults can relate to the characters and simply enjoy the adult adventure they are on with them. Five stars out of five for this book. It is an absolute honor to be on an adventure with James and Cat. That’s right; the experience will put you on a first name basis with them.
