Write in FIRST-PERSON “I”….I will now share with you what you just read in the previous page for “Finalizing English 1A”:BE HONEST. THAT IS PARAMOUNT. Don’t argue for a “B-” when you already KNOW you will be blessed to get a “C” as your final grade.Just argue for the “C” and explain why you should NOT get a “D” which will cause you to repeat English 1A.Come on. Just be HONEST.If you think you deserve the B+ and not the A-, then write your essay accordingly. Define what a B is, then define what an A is. Use the HARVARD UNIVERSITY definitions and at least ONE MORE university definition, and then explain how you fell into the B category (even a B+ is still in the B category) and not into the A category.On the other hand, maybe you believe you deserve the A- and not the B+. Again, you are defining what an A is, then what a B is, and then within all the categories on the Self-Evaluation form, you provided numbers (and explanations in your essay) to defend the A and NOT THE B. YOU HAVE TO TALK ABOUT THE OTHER GRADE. YOU HAVE TO BE FAIR-MINDED. Of course you want the A and believe you have earned it. BUT WHY MIGHT THE JUDGE IN YOUR CASE (aka Mr. Edd) disagree with you? What might support the B instead of the A??? BE HONEST!The same applies to those of you arguing for a B as opposed to a C.The same applies to those of you arguing for a C as opposed to a D (and repeating English 1A).BE HONEST. SERIOUSLY. If you feel you have NOT succeeded in English 1A, then say so. Argue for a D rather than a C or an F. BE HONEST.ASK YOURSELF:How are my WRITING SKILLS IN STANDARD WRITTEN ENGLISH?Do I think some of your assignments could have been better written?Did I PROOFREAD ALOUD in ALL of my assignments? Did I turn in anything late?Did I RUSH THROUGH an assignment, and then later, when I looked it over, did I see mistakes?Why should Mr. Edd (Judge Williams; The Honorable Mr. Edd) ignore those writing errors or other writing difficulties???When I email back, I will either agree with you or not. If I agree, then everybody is happy. Good job. YOU ARE DONE! Congratulations!But if I DISAGREE, I will tell you why and I will tell you what grade I think you should get in the class.You then have the option to agree with the alternate grade or not.If you agree with the alternate grade, then YOU ARE DONE! You will be sending it directly to me in my email at edd.williams@mvc.eduI have been doing this process for over 35 years, and I can attest to the tiny percent of students who have confirmed a higher grade (e.g., B- rather than C+). It has happened, but only a few times in 35+ years. The final exam usually CONFIRMS the grade that I offered (or, in most cases, LOWERS the grade that I offered). My advice is simple: if I disagree with your self-evaluation, then take a close look at the grade I think you have earned, at the reasons why, and seriously consider accepting the grade rather than taking the final exam. My final exam is NOT easy.BUT, if you REALLY BELIEVE you can do well on the final test, then take the final and prove me wrong! It is, after all, the END of the class, so the STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (the SLOs in the syllabus) should be what you have achieved, and they should come out in a final exam like this, right?Of course!It’s up to you. But at least now you know what you’re deciding. Actually, you have known since Jan 3rd because this information is in the syllabus.ONE FINAL SUGGESTION:PROOFREAD ALOUD before you send your Self-Evaluation Essay to me.It would be weird to argue for a B- in an essay filled with obvious errors like missing/wrong words and a few run-on sentences.And imagine arguing for an A- in an essay with these kinds of errors?!I would write back and say, I can’t agree with the A-. Indeed, I can’t even agree with the B-. Sorry, but I think the “C” is the appropriate grade for you in English 1A Summer 2021. It will then be up to you to agree or take the final exams.FINAL SUGGESTION: BE HONEST. Listen to your HEART. It knows!DUE DATE FOR SELF-EVALUATION ESSAY: Monday Night, 6PM, July 26th.
