Transformational Learning

Transformational learning is the process of acquiring and applying knowledge in real life situations. It is important that any tools used for the learning process are related to the lesson intended. For instance, the activities and instructional strategies used in driving schools are a good example of how transformational learning applies. This form of learning is well supported by the transformative learning theory by Jack Mezirow (Pappas, 2016). It is guided by four practical principles that make it efficient to apply in the lives of the learners. The learning experiences are outlined, the learners are encouraged to change their perspective, change in the process, content or underlying ideas and finally, the transformation of the educational experience into the professional life of the learner.

Experiential learning is faced with challenges because of the limited knowledge that people have of the theory. It requires that people learn by experience rather than by being taught. Experiential and transformational learning can only work well when people have the right information and knowledge about the theories and their applications. The best method of dealing with these challenges is ensuring that before anybody embarks on driving the agenda of experiential learning, they have sufficient information for their own use. Challenges come about when the educator does not have adequate information to impart on the learners. It is important for learners to have an educator who understands how to match the content to the tools used in teaching. It goes to show that people would be well learned only if they went through the hands of an experienced educator. However, educators have to have experience before they can claim their position as experimental learning educators.
