University of California Los Angeles Latin America History Questions

For this assignment you have to curate a museum exhibit that focuses on the history of Latin America and addresses content from the course. Think about museum exhibits you have attended. They usually consist of a series of artifacts and short exp lanations that contextualize the artifacts for the visitor. This is exactly what you are exp ected to do for your final assignment. Think about the main themes covered in class and use your creativity to select the artifacts. Your museum exhibit will consist of four main p arts, each one corresp onding to the four thematic units of the course (see A below). For each theme or p art, you have to p rovide the historical background of the p eriod (see B below). Besides the background, you have to identify 2 artifacts that illustrate each p eriod (see C below). In addition, you should justify your artifact choice by exp laining why you think the artifact is rep resentative of the p eriod (see D below).  General instructions A- Thematic units – Your exhibit will be organized in four p arts. Each p art will corresp ond to the thematic units discussed in the course:  ? Original inhabitants and Conquest  ? Africans and Slavery and colonial institutions ? Peasants and the Neocolonial order ? Women and Nationalism and revolution  B- Background – For each thematic unit, you need to p rovide the history of the p eriod. This section should discuss the historical p rocesses that serve as background to the artifacts you have chosen.  C- Artifacts – Your exhibit will have a total of 8 artifacts , 2 for each thematic unit. You should include an image of the artifact. Artifacts can be anything that rep resents or illustrates aspects of the p eriod examined in the unit. For examp le, it could be a p ainting, a song, a p oem, a p hotograph, a material good, a cartoon, an individual, a food, a commodity, a crop , a group  of p eop le, or anything that comes to mind.  D- Justification – Finally, you should exp lain why and how you think the artifacts are rep resentative of the p eriod under examination. Format and additional important information 1- Sources  a. For this assignment you should use two different typ es of outside sources. For the historical context of each unit, you have to find any history book of the p eriod and use its information. For examp le, you can use the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture by Jay Kinsbruner or A Companion to Latin American History by Thomas Holloway, both available online at the CSUN library.  b. For the artifacts, you should rely on reliable internet sources. Any source is fine, and you can use images from the recorded lectures or the reading quizzes.  2- Bibliograp hy: p lease include a bibliograp hy at the end of the document. Any citation style is fine.  o Length – Ideally, each thematic unit should be around 750 words long. I have suggested a tentative number of words for this assignment but I will not be counting words so please don’t feel you have to write those many words. Just make sure that you provide some background and a clear justification for your artifact choices. 3- Deadline – The deadline to submit this assignment is Friday, January 20 before midnight. No late submissions will be accep ted as I am obligated to p ost final grades no later than January 2 2.  4- Up load – Create ONE document in PDF format with all the themes. The system will not let you up load more than one submission.
