Disciplinary research, on the other hand, is a research mode where an individual gathers data, information, theories, techniques, and perspectives from one discipline. A researcher that employs interdisciplinary research gathers much information about a topic as compared to one that uses the disciplinary method of research. Interdisciplinary research helps researchers to develop critical thinking skills as they will analyze information from various disciplines. It also helps to research extensively the topic under study because the analysis of data from different disciplines ensures that all the relevant data that is available is used to do a conclusive research.

Some of the questions that guide students to understand this course include, what are the various methods used to conduct research and how a person can conduct a research successfully. Through IDST research, students have learned new methods of conducting research in a more conclusive manner as they are taught how to combine two or more disciplines while conducting research. By doing this, students gather much information that they find relevant to their topic of study, and this enables them to perform an analysis of what different authors have researched on the topic. After a careful analysis, the students come up with a final report on the topic under research. It also helps students to gain more knowledge that they would not have obtained if they did not use the research method.

One of the components I learned in this course is the integration of information and data from different disciplines when conducting research. This new idea helped me to understand how I can use information from other disciplines to ensure that I conduct a well-detailed research. I also got to learn how to analyze the different information gathered by selecting the data that is more relevant to the study. The data should also be recent because there are advancements that happen in various disciplines regularly, and it is necessary that the gathered data to be have been recently conducted to avoid confusion when analyzing.
What ideas or areas of the course remain “fuzzy” or unclear? This may help you clarify what needs further study, and help me recognize which areas need more attention.
Analyzing of the data is, however, still challenging to me because a lot of information needs to be studied. Confusion also happens when recent data needs to be used in the study. In some instances, the data that was gathered about the topic several years ago seems relevant to the study and its incorporation into the study may be relevant. The use of various disciplines to conduct research may also be confusing because a researcher gathers a lot of information from different authors. The use of different books, journals, and articles from different disciplines causes confusion because some authors may have varying views on the topic under study. This is challenging to the researcher as the individual may not know the data to use for the study.
“Writing as a researcher” was a major theme in this course. Why is it important to write in neutral voice when making arguments based on scholarly evidence?
Writing in research requires one to be neutral because it will ensure that an individual conducts a detailed research. If the researcher takes a side on the topic under study, the information given in the report will be biased because it will reflect the researcher’s point of view (Giles 215). The researcher should gather and critically analyze all the information presented in the study without being biased. Maintaining a neutral voice also helps the researcher to understand clearly the topic.
