Labour laws today provide a myriad of benefits. They benefits are in various forms and vary all across the globe. Workplace safety is very common. Labour laws make sure that all employers provide safe working conditions.  The United States in 1970 passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act. It stipulates that employers should ensure that all workplaces are safe and inform employees of any possible hazardous material. Furthermore, any injuries that occur in the workplace are to be reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (Hyman, 2012).

Minimum wage is another merit of the workplace laws. All employees in the United States are entitled to the federal minimum wage.  The government set this amount at $7.55 in 2009 (Hyman, 2012). Some States however have higher minimum wage standards. Other exceptions to the federal minimum wages also exist such as wages for students and tipped employees.

Ethical compliance holds various disadvantages to the parties involved. Cost is one of the fundamental issues to consider. Adequate funds are a necessity for an organisation to be able to create and implement a comprehensive ethics compliance program (Hyman, 2012). Such an undertaking is also very time-consuming.  Ethical policies require continuous updating to reflect changes in the company’s culture as well as workplace laws.

Have you ever been involved with or witnessed an illegal or unethical workplace law situation?

Yes, I have. A 39-year-old engineer in a reputable pipe manufacturing company had his contract terminated because of whistle blowing on the deplorable working conditions in the company. From a managerial point of view, it is very expensive to provide workers with protective gears, according to their nature of work. However, ethics dictates that such practices are wrong. Additionally, the Occupational Safety and Health Act call for measures to be taken against such organisations.
