Your final assignment for this class is to write a paper. We began this class by considering the bias in the writing of American Indian History. From this class it is my hope you now have a broad framework of American Indian History. I now would like you to dive back into American Indian History and choose a topic that was of particular interest to you in our study. Your job is to explore your topic or an event in American Indian History through the eyes of American Indians. You are welcome to use some of the historical documents in your textbook we were not able to include in our study. For example, if you are interested in the Relocation Act you might go to the document on page 479 in your text entitled “Brought to a Brotherhood” by Ignatia Broker to explore the impact the act had on Native Americans. If you are interested in the Violence Against Women Act and how it interfaces with the Tribal Law and Order Act you might read Deborah Parker’s “I Am a Native American Statistic” to explore how violence has affected Indian women. You may also interview a family member or friend for this paper, if they have Native American heritage, to explore their experience with a topic related to American Indian history. Some questions to ponder as you write your paper.1. What was the intention of the policy/war/treaty?2. Or alternatively what was the mindset of the parties involved in the interaction?3. How did Native people respond?4. What was the outcome for Native people? Note, I am asking you to use at least 2 peer-reviewed articles or books for this paper. You are welcome to use your textbook as one source but I would like you to find at least one other source. If this poses a problem email me and we will figure something out together. I don’t mean to make your life more difficult but what I do mean to do is to be aware that websites and sources that are not peer-reviewed run the risk of being biased and perpetuating ideas that are not grounded in fact.
