Helen J Zedlitz tells her beautiful story growing up in the 1940s, her parents, life, picking cotton and schooling. The first thing I noted when reading this book is the simplicity in the author’s words. It is easy for the reader to move with the flow of the story. Helen’s life is interesting. All the memories she mentions and the good times she talks about show nothing but passion for life.
One thing I loved about this book was the pictures the author shared after each chapter; She shares memories of her cousins, parents, siblings, and friends through the images. Not only were the pictures beautiful, but also made me love and admire their family unit. I loved that the pictures made her story more colorful.
Helen also talks about politics while growing up. She mentions former American presidents and how their administrations ruled and also highlights how politics plays a huge role in every day living. Her childhood wasn’t easy, but she loved everything nonetheless. In her story, we earn how important family is and why we should appreciate the things we have. Helen talking about her school days delighted me. Not only did I love her personality but I also wished I that I could see her grow and learn all the amazing things she learned. She faced a few challenges while going to school, having to walk a mile on the first day to school just to catch the bus is not how we picture going o school. The cold winter which made her feel like her fingers were freezing didn’t make the situation easier. She was a farm child. This meant that she together with her parents and others picked cotton every time before winter set in.
I love reading stories which show me the other side of people. Some of the personal details the author shared inspired me in many ways. I enjoyed reading how Helen started school, moving throughout her childhood, finishing school and taking odd jobs and beating every obstacle to achieve her goals.
Helen loved reading. This is one character I loved about her. You know something new every time you read. Reading expands your thinking and makes you sharp. Helen knew this and that is why she read library books and everything she came across. Her ability to be able to so well tell stories was another quality I admired in her. She loved sharing, and she would always tell stories to her siblings.
Reading through this book made me feel like I grew up watching and interacting with Helen J. Bradberry. She narrates her story so well, that one feels like they have been a part of her life. I loved that she mentioned her children and how much they mean to her. I totally enjoyed reading this book, as the stories told are both amazing and inspiring. I feel like the book should have been longer, as I really wanted to know more about the author’s life.
